During the period of time between your signing up and the season starting, both the club and your coaches are doing a lot of work! Here's how you, as a parent, can help your team, your coach, and the club.
- Most important, respond to your coach. When your coach asks you for paperwork or for the answer to an email, please respond AS SOON AS YOU CAN.
- Pay dues to your coaches as soon as you are asked. Coaches often pay out of pocket for expenses, and have to chase after parents for the money that is owed them, which is unfair to them. No child is denied a position on the team due to inability to pay. Please contact the President of the club as SOON as possible at president@syscboard.org if you feel you have a financial hardship. This communication is totally confidential.
- Volunteer to help your team and the club. There are many activities that you can help out with that DO NOT require that you know soccer!
- Make a commitment to punctuality. Clear your child's schedule so that your child can be on time for practices and games.
- Support your coach. Support your coach. Do not yell instructions to your child at a game or practice. Actually, do NOT yell at games at all.
- Teach your child to respect and listen to your coach. Soccer in the SYSC is not all about soccer. It's about your child learning commitment. On a soccer team, it's the interdependence among players that makes for success in soccer. Your child must be willing to commit to coming to team practices and taking the time to learn new skills. It's about learning to work together in a team, learning to listen to a central person, and learning respect for opponents, coaches, referees, rules, and for the game.
In late August, your coach will notify you of your team's schedule for the Fall. If your child has conflicts with the team's schedule:
- It is critical to remain in communication with your coach, ESPECIALLY IF THERE ARE ISSUES.
- If your child cannot practice on the team's practice days, there may be an opportunity for your child to practice with another team in the same age group. This is more common in the elementary grades.
- Playing travel soccer should be a priority for your child.
