Scarsdale Youth Soccer Club

Policies - Team Placement

For children in elementary school, there are NO CUTS. Everyone who registers and has completed their paperwork by the deadline is guaranteed to be placed on a team.

For children in Middle School, the club makes every effort to accommodate children who register and complete paperwork by the deadline. However, the size of these teams, as well as the need to provide a good amount of playing time for each child means that there may be situations in which there may be a number of children who cannot be placed on a team.

In the past, the club has attempted to relocate children to other age groups if possible. However, there may be no options. Children who are not able to be placed on a team for this reason will have all fees refunded timely, and will be notified if additional openings occur for the next season

While we commit to and follow through with placement on teams for all of the children possible, we as a club cannot control children dropping off a team. If teams become of insufficient size to field a team each week, and it is too late to change the composition of the teams in the age group, the children on the affected team may no longer be able to play in the league.

Q: My family is new to Scarsdale, just moved in. I’ve got a soccer-super-star! Can she/he play on your top level team?

A: On occasion, players have moved into Scarsdale after the completion of our tryout process but prior to the deadline for WYSL roster changes.  Often, the player’s family will seek out the club to request that their child play on a team. If the child wishes to play on the lowest level team, or on a balanced team, the child will be permitted to play if there is room on the roster. If the child is a very skilled player and is interested in a spot on our “A” team, the following conditions must be met:

  • The coach must be willing to add this additional player to his/her roster and no current player on the roster may be displaced by this roster move.
  • The coach must agree to ensure no reduction in otherwise expected playing time for the players at the lower end of the ability range.
  • A tryout or evaluation with an independent evaluator must be conducted for the player, the result of MUST CLEARLY place the player in the TOP half of the team from a skills perspective.  An evaluation may be defined as either a regular team practice, a camp attended by a majority of the team, or a tournament attended by the team.

If any of the above conditions are not met, the player may play on the lowest level WYSL team (pending space on the roster) until he/she goes through the normal spring tryout process or a special tryout conducted for the purpose of filling a vacancy on the team.
